Change is everywhere: in how we communicate, what we do for a living, the values we hold, the way we raise our children, even the way we access information. Thanks to a global economy, the force of the Internet, and the explosion of mobile technology, we have—almost imperceptibly—entered into a new era, the Shift Age, in which change happens so quickly that it’s become the norm. We’re undergoing a major collapse of legacy thinking that is eroding many of the thought structures that defined the last 200 years. What are some of the new forces that will shape our lives in the next 20 years?
What is The Shift Age? The Shift Age is the age we now live in. While we commonly refer to today as the Information Age, the truth is that we have actually left the Information Age behind, and have entered the Shift Age. In fact, this is why everything has felt so disruptive and different in recent years. In the five years since I wrote the book The Shift Age, we have been in the midst a reorganizational recession between two ages. Transitions to new ages are always disruptive. But if you understand why this is taking place, and the key components of the new Shift Age, you can see the opportunity beyond the disruption. The Shift Age has three flows that are reshaping humanity now and for at least the next ten to fifteen years. The first flow is the Flow to Global. We are getting organized around the global economy, the macro-macro. There is no bigger economic unit than all of us. We have entered the global stage of human evolution. The second flow is the Flow to the Individual. In the last 30 years there has been an explosion of choice. This means that power has flowed from the producer to the consumer, from the institution to the individuals. We as individuals have more power than at any time in history. So we are also getting organized around the micro-micro. There is no smaller economic unit than each of us. The third flow is the Accelerating Electronic Connectedness of humanity. This flow has not only amplified the first two flows, it is perhaps the most powerful force in the world today. We are getting ever more connected at an accelerated rate. As a result, content is created at an ever more rapid rate. About the Author David Houle is a futurist, strategist and keynote speaker.
