ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bob Welch is the general columnist for The (Eugene) Register-Guard, Oregon’s second-largest newspaper. He is the only newspaper columnist in America to have been honored by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists the last four years in a row. In addition, he has won dozens of journalism awards, including the Seattle Times C.B. Blethen Award for Distinguished Feature Writing (following a series about serving on a medical team in Haiti) and the Oregon Newspaper Publisher Association's “Best Writing” award. Welch is the author of seven books, including America Nightingale, A Father for All Seasons and Where Roots Grow Deep. A 1976 graduate of the University of Oregon, Welch serves as an adjunct professor of journalism at his alma mater, teaching Reporting I. Welch has two adult sons, 25 and 22. He and his wife Sally live in Eugene, Ore. His hobbies include sailing, used-book browsing, Pacific Ocean wave-watching and University of Oregon sports-spectating.
